More pictures from my archive will soon be on display. This body of work, which some of you may remember, is still very close to my heart. I called the project ‘100 Faces of Vietnam’, and whilst reviewing them with pride, I realised how privileged I was when I was invited to take their portraits. With great fondness, I remember the day I met these extraordinary people, and the excitement I felt about the given glimpse into their lives.
For the upcoming members show at Gallery 1885 I chose 2 people who are working with their hands. Creatives, so to speak, and I felt very much at home in their workshop environment.
Let’s start with Chau Pham (above), he is a fine art painter and designer. Pham has a small studio inside his apartment in Hanoi, which he has occupied for over 15 years. Occasionally he is selling his paintings trough a gallery. However, he explains that he finds it difficult to make a living from art alone, therefore he supplements his income by teaching art at a local school.
Le Dinh Hung is running a workshop for motorbike repair services, also in Hanoi. He started his training when he was 13 and now he is 25. He knows everything about his subject and can build custom motorbikes on request. Hung's free time is limited. After he finishes work, he spends the evening on Social Media. Sounds familiar?
